Despite Steven Spielberg's excitement and affection for the book's prospect as his next feature roboblockbuster, Robopocalypse is short on story, as well as being something of a disappointment as a work of hard sf.

Somer's genius lies in not just being able to write a convincing slugfest, but in being able to track the small-group dynamics the characters work through as they go from hostile strangers to an effective fighting unit, dealing with betrayal and deceit at every turn along the way.

Chasing the Moon is different enough from the author's previous stories so that it's considerably more than a re-skinning of his earlier works, but his themes remain front and center.

Simon Morden's Petrovich/Machine Jihad/Metrozone trilogy is starting up with the very excellent Equations of Life, which is a terrific read.

...I like Embedded quite a lot. Every generation has their own sort of war, and Abnett's clearly got the sense of this one.

The only downside of the novel, is that you probably can't write about space operations without doing a lot of exposition. That's okay by me, because I learn a lot from exposition, and reading fiction is a painless way to learn.

Though it's reasonably enjoyable, at least after you get past the setup, it feels more grafted on than genuine.
