There is a lot going on in Flesh and Spirit. Valen is an affable and interesting character, and the political turmoil and religious dissension bring a gritty realism to Berg's fantasy world.

I found Dragon in Chains to be an exquisite and elegant piece of literary fantasy and must say that its rich texture of impressions and sensations ought to be savoured slowly, like a piece of high-quality dark chocolate -- with leisure and delight.

She successfully reinterprets history from a female perspective thus vindicating a much reviled historical figure while at the same time evoking a vivid impression of the ancient world.

I found The Republic of Vengeance a charming if somewhat bland reading experience where only the vivid and lyrical representation of the Antique world balances out the uneven episodic narrative and the psychological flatness of the characters.

In sum, I found Pamela Freeman's Blood Ties to be a largely competent piece of fantasy fiction and a pleasant but rather bland reading experience.
