Like all de Lint's work there are layers within the book. Jilly is not only an Onion Girl, these books need peeling back, too, to find their inner cores.

While it is difficult to call a book like this enjoyable, there is much to appreciate not least the way the events build to a crescendo and leaves lingering the question as to where truth really lies.

Like many writing in the SF field in the fifties and sixties, many of Vinge's stories are centred around ideas. This may lead to some readers finding the earlier stories heavy going.
