It has to be said that while Firth's narrative carries the reader along, overall The Nemesis List seems to spend much time providing background and in scene setting.

What Surface Detail does do is demonstrate that there is plenty of life left in 'Culture' stories and that Banks' SF continues to be saturated with sense of wonder (sensawunda).

Given in Instinct we are presented with a poorly assembled plot that at best is a scantily coordinated mash of (admittedly worthy) SF tropes [...], underpinned by virtually zero researched science and stereotypical characters, what amazes me is that a publisher like Penguin accepted this book in the first place!
