Whilst not an unmitigated disaster, it is, in the end, a rather disappointingly unsuccessful attempt to combine pulp style fiction with more adult ideas.

It is, unabashedly, a new style modern superhero novel with a distinctive twist. It is also current, smart, energetic and a sparkling read.

In the end, it's the sort of fast-paced, action-heavy, dialogue-clichéd story that reads like a novel based on a game or a movie outline

Atmospherically creepy, disturbing, and wonderfully English in their understated nature and simple statements of supernatural happenings, [the stories] may be too mannered for some readers tastes, but for many, like me, their inherent creepiness is eminently readable.

The quality of the writing still shines through. If nothing else, this underrated novel shows a multi-talented writer at his most versatile.

Whilst not perfect, and clearly still setting up for Book Three, this is a rollicking tale of entertainment and energy that will satisfy fans of the first book.

...in summary, a great, but for me not an outstanding, read, though I suspect that many readers will not be as critical as me. For some readers this will be wonderfully entertaining, whilst others, I suggest, approach with caution.

I would not say that Odd John is an enjoyable tale, but it is one that makes the reader think and is therefore all the more important for that.
