Highest recommendation for this novel as it will appeal to fans of Epic / High Fantasy as well as those who may find themselves tired of the tropes that have been re-cooked without new flavors for so long.

Truth is, I find Abraham's depiction of conspiracies and economic repercussions, as well as his parsimonious use of magic, to be more compelling than many a fantasy novel filled with "epic" battles and "wizardly fire."

The characters are engaging and well-motivated, the plot intriguing despite some surface familiarity, and events are resolved enough to not make the wait for the second book, The King's Blood, too painful.

Yet for all of its familiarity, the story is still a compelling one, highlighted by unpredictable twists and interesting subplots like the one involving Cithrin, the Medean Bank and economics.

...Abraham questions and explores the fantasy-world assumptions that most authors take for granted, telling an enjoyable and genuinely innovative adventure story along the way. (Starred Review)

Although somewhat less innovative than his previous work, this is a solid Epic Fantasy from Daniel Abraham.

The Dragon's Path is strong on characterization and distressingly weak on worldbuilding, gender, and race issues. It's also long, and, perhaps worse, feels long.
