Jake lives at the Makepeace Institute of Integrated Dragon Studies in Smokehill National Park. There are five million acres of the Smokehill wilderness, and the endangered dragons rarely show themselves. Jake’s never seen one except at a distance. But then, on his first overnight solo in the park, he meets a dragon—and she is dying. More than that, she has just given birth, and one of the babies is still alive. . . .

The story, when it does take center stage, is powerful, absorbing, and exquisitely rendered. McKinley makes those dragons real.

This may not be my favorite dragon story but I feel the book will appeal to readers, especially to young readers.

The end result is a sometimes stilted read where I would sometimes find myself skipping the odd paragraph in a quest to get to the point.

Different in tone than most books that soar with dragons, Robin McKinley writes an enchanting urban fantasy adults and teens will enjoy.

it is neither the occasionally shaky science or expected dragon clichés that bog down the story. It is Jake's narration. For when his voice fails to ring true, it fails spectacularly, rendering some passages, at best, confusing and, at worst, floundering in speech tics only Joss Whedon could get away with.
