The Fade

Written by Chris Wooding

Average Score: 80(5)

A subterranean world of vast caverns, underground seas, crystalline forests. A civilization born of darkness, in darkness, protected by shadows. A city of merchants, whose eyes have turned upward to the surface, where the lethal light of day beats down on their world. A conspiracy so vast that it will swallow them all. This stunningly original fantasy from a multi-award winning author introduces an epic quest across a world like no other in fantasy.

The Fade is a masterfully blended gumbo, from which every so often some Mystery Meat surfaces that leads the reader to think Aha, that passage reminds me of Chris Priest, or David Masson.

The Fade is a terrific novel. Relatively short (just over 300 pages in hardcover) it is nonetheless superbly-written with vivid characters.

Though a standalone book, there are elements left unresolved, though on balance the book is very satisfying.

...this is a lean, mean, self-contained novel with a satisfying conclusion.

Though not quite up there with the best, I found it to be a superior slice of high fantasy, certainly better than many other such books.
