What is this web site about ?
This web site tries to find every reviews from trusted online sources about books from the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres. For every review, a short excerpt, the reviewer score (We assign a score to the review if none is given, if possible) and a link to the original review are included. A average score is also calculated for every book.
When has this web site been started ?
The construction of the website began in April 2009, and it was officially launched on December 20th 2009.
How are the genres defined ?
There are now 3 genres on the web site, Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. The books are classified on these criteria :
Science Fiction : The book needs to be based a future technology where everything is explained by hard science.
Fantasy : The book contains some mythical or magical elements.
Horror : Horror is more defined as a writing style, it can contains supernatural elements or not. A book with say vampires but with a focus on adventure or humor is not considered horror in this web site but fantasy.
How is the book average score calculated?
A book average score is simply the average score of every reviews listed for that particular book. The scores (taken from the review original website) are all converted to a 0-100 grade, so 3 stars out of 5 would give a score of 60. If a book had 3 scores, one of 60, one of 70 and one of 90, the score would be the sum divided by 3, so 220 / 3 = 73.3, rounded down to 73. The smaller number in parenthesis to the right of the average score is the number of scored reviews for this book. Only books with at least 3 scored reviews get a color coded average score, to highlight books where there is enough scored reviews to make the average representative.
How should the average score be interpreted?
The scores should be seen more like a star system than a % system used in school's tests. So a score of 60 should be seen as 3 stars out of 5, which means a good but not great book, and not a book that "barely pass".

In Detail :
20 - Very bad book, many flaws, definitely not recommended.
40 - Mediocre book, or average book with a serious flaw, not recommended, but can still be readable.
60 - Good but not great book. Can be recommended for fans of the genre.
80 - Great book, definitely recommended.
100 - Masterpiece.
